Introduction to Literature (course number 52-1600) introduces students to
the genres of fiction, drama, and poetry. By studying important works by
writers of culturally diverse backgrounds, students gain experience reading,
analyzing,
and interpreting literature. The course establishes connections between literature
and other areas of arts and communications; students are better prepared
for their majors in these fields. Prerequisite:
English Composition I.
Introduction to Literature fulfills the LAS Core Humanities/Literature requirement. All sections of the course share common learning outcomes, although each syllabus will vary. Some sections have subtitles indicating a thematic emphasis, such as African-American literature or Film and Literature. We emphasize creative projects in students' various arts and communications fields. Visit the gallery of student projects as well as the resources for students.
